You are what you eat said a wise person. This is of course, the literal truth. So, some of us strive for the elusive size 0; others want the as-elusive flat stomach and eat accordingly. Most of us however, would rather eat what the stomach demands; flat stomach be damned. A recent Twitter trend proved the fact that a lot of us would rather eat than work for a flat stomach.
This kicked things off and a conversation about foodie desires and cravings started. At a cerebral level we know that what tastes good – chips, burgers, sugary treats – is often unhealthy, but we crave it anyway; the desire for a flat stomach paling into insignificance.
Many of us have those generously padded, squishy, soft stomachs where we would have preferred those washboard abs to be.
There are those among us who eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle but who still cannot come close to that flat stomach ideal.
Some among us appear to be blessed with an incredible metabolism; one that digests everything that is thrown at it – including junk – and yet refuses to protrude.
Some of us crave sweets, some crave chicken nuggets in the shape of dinosaurs – and everyone knows that nuggets are the poor cousins in the world of chicken snacks.
There is a reason it’s called a beer belly – we are not just what we eat; we are also what we drink.
A lot of us breathe easy (literally) because of stretchy pants with elastic waistbands. They are comfy and they hide that pesky paunch – to an extent.
Most of us swallowed something inedible as babies: crayons, coins, paper, toys and wonder if the residue is still in there somewhere. Some of us think that the chewing gum we accidentally swallowed is still in there somewhere because we (mistakenly) believe that it takes the body 7 years to get rid of the gum from the system.
Dadi fed some of us copious amounts of ghee. For others, it is the Italian heritage and the pasta that will never result in a flat stomach.
Some of us resolve to be good and do all that is needed for that flat stomach, but fail to realise that it is a long, arduous process. Results, if any are slow to show.
Some of us fall for the clever product marketing that promises quick fix results. Tip – there are no quick fixes when it comes to that flat stomach.
Some of us are weak and sad when it comes to resisting temptation. And then we ask ourselves – why resist temptation at all!
