I am not sure exactly when and how it happened, but we went from elaborate charades to create the illusion of Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy for our daughters to the girls sanguinely dismissing the existence of both at some point. They were quite OK with the discovery of our deceit (except for the fact that there were no longer any presents to be found on Christmas morning or coins under pillows which they didn’t think was fair). However, a lot of kids could be quite disillusioned and heartbroken at discovering the fiction of the Tooth Fairy. Then some kids are like this:
A dad posted this note written in a childish scrawl on a scrap of paper. It is addressed to the tooth fairy mum and dad. It asks them to ‘stop lying’ and pay more. The note ends on a note of high curiosity – what do you do with all our teeth? TELL ME!
Most people thought that the question about the teeth was really funny, and some others had had the same experience. This parent had told their child (writing pretending to be the tooth fairy) “I am building a castle with the children’s teeth”. Terrifying – I agree!
Someone had this idea – also terrifying!
That is a most excellent child, said a commentator. Most were appreciating the forthrightness and confidence of the child who wrote the note; as well as her sense of humour.
The fact that the child describes herself as the favourite child shows a great deal of self-belief felt this commentator.
While most commentators felt that the little girl was really clever to write the letter as well as to add the little passive-aggressive ‘tip’.
This actually a great idea! I think I want to laminate some of the cards my girls have made and notes they have written me over the years.
This commentator shared how their child felt that the tooth fairy visiting their grandparent’s house seemed more generous.
Some kids point out that telling a kid to believe in myths and fantasies goes against what their parents try to teach them about honesty and telling the truth.
Kids can apparently have a lot of questions about the Tooth Fairy.
Meanwhile other shared stories of clever kids who actually took advantage of trusting parents. This kid ‘recycled’ his teeth to continue to get money/gifts from the ‘tooth fairy’.
Some recall a time when the notes used to be about tooth fairies and Father Christmas. Later they became about other more pragmatic stuff.
