Karwa Chauth is a festival that many of us were unaware of until Karan Johar told us about it via his films such as DDLJ (Dlwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) and K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham). The yearly festival of women fasting for the long life of their husbands came around on 4 November this year and Twitter burst forth with Karwa Chauth memes.
So we had the adoring wife looking at the moon – and her beloved – through a sieve on the occasion in numerous films.
People were wishing each other; many using those visuals from the KJo films.
Many spoke of how the festival signifies strong will among Indian women and how fasting is supposed to be good for health.
In recent times, it has become fashionable for teenagers to fast for their boyfriend or girlfriend as well – perhaps to show their youthful passion and commitment
Single women were having a regular day.
The mehndi, the dressing up and the pooja are big parts of the celebration.
Thanks to the pandemic, some celebrated a little differently this year.
For some women, this is a one in a year chance to bring out the red saree and really deck up.
This tweet jokes about husbands to mean suffering; presumably, she is suffering for the sake of her husband and his long life.
Or waiting for the food?
Their wives fasting all day, then doing Pooja and even touching their feet before touching food and water must make some men feel rather more important than usual on this day.
They probably felt left out.
Thanks to Raj in DDLJ? Maybe.
But hunger tends to be more acutely felt on the day.
It is something everyone waits for on Karwa Chauth.
The sight of the moon is what women wait for, so that they can break their day long fast.
Coincidently, Delhi and surrounding areas experienced their worst pollution levels and a pall of smog hung over the region all day.
The smog made the moon even more difficult to spot perhaps resulting in a few frayed tempers as well.
When they glimpse the moon, there is a great sense of celebration – for one or more reasons.
Thanks to Raj in DDLJ? Maybe. Karaj Johar’s movies made sure all of India knew about Karwa Chauth. It is definitely one of the reasons this has become such a pan-Indian observance these days.
