It is that time of year when we take a good long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror and examine what we feel we need to change about ourselves. The New Year marks new beginnings and is the ideal time to resolve to change for the better. People had some funny, sensible, unusual New Year resolutions to share on Twitter and Reddit; perhaps some of these ideas will help with your own?
Bad habits, susceptibility to fake news, holding on to resentment and toxic relationships are just some of the things that we can decide to get rid of. Clearing the mental clutter may be more difficult than clearly physical clutter, but it is also more rewarding.
Sleep is so very important: it lowers stress, gives the body time to heal, improves the memory, shores up the immune system and more. Resolve to make time for some quality shut eye this year.
….Also don’t beat yourself up if you don’t achieve that mythical perfection. Remember one person's perfection is another’s mess!
Weight loss is the single most common New Year resolution. Rather than that, resolve to become healthy and fit this year. Start small. Devote half an hour each day to physical activity. Pick anything you like: walk, cycle, swim, playing a sport.
"Read a book for at least 10 minutes a day," suggested one on Reddit. I maintain that no reading is futile. It all adds up; it all helps.
"Think of three good things that happened to you throughout the day, and write them down,” was another suggestion. Concentrating on our blessings helps us become more positive, keeps us feeling motivated and happier.
Forgive others, forgive yourself as well. Bearing grudges can be really burdensome and emotionally exhausting. Forgiving is about letting go of all that is toxic and corrosive to your wellbeing.
In recent times, when political and ideological beliefs have divided us into different camps, try to get to know the ‘other’ a little better this year. I think it is important to remember that the beliefs people have don’t make them bad or good. Those with different views could be lovely, generous, intelligent people. Get to know and recognise that! So, “Choose one person you disagree with and take them out to lunch,” as this Ted Talk suggests.
Do something new. Learn a new language, pick up a new hobby, make new friends, learn how to play an instrument. Not only is this great to keep the brain active and young, it helps you grow as a human being.
This guy’s bike stunt is most likely a recipe for disaster… particularly on Indian roads; however having no resolutions, no particular plan or goal can also work for some people! Why not consider that as well!
