8 Reasons Why Asking for Help is a Good Idea

Some of us hesitate to ask for help because we aren’t sure whether the other person is willing to help or not. Some don’t want to ask for help because it seems like an admission of defeat, weakness or inadequacy. Then there are those who don’t ask for help because they don’t want to burden the other person. However, there are many reasons why asking for help is a great idea:

It fosters trust between people

You trust someone enough to ask them for help. That is like paying someone a compliment; because it shows them that you trust them to know what they're doing.

It gets the job done faster, better

Two heads are better than one, goes the old adage. More, better ideas will occur when you're working in tandem with someone else. Your task will seem less onerous, tedious and time-consuming. Asking for help can be a great stress buster!

It keeps us humble

Working alone can make us arrogant; we have nothing to measure our performance against. When we ask for help, we can see that others have abilities and skills that may be different and complementary to our own.

You get on with your job

We tend to procrastinate and put off chores or projects that we perceive as difficult. However, the job may be less difficult for someone else. And when you have help, it gives you the confidence you need to make a start.

It’s fun!

When you ask for help, you get to know a person better. Who knows, you may actually like them! You may have fun working together!

Effective division of labour

You concentrate on your core capabilities and let someone else help you with things that you aren’t as good or as skilled at. It is likely that you will enjoy doing what you're good at; the person you’ve asked for help may be the same!

You don’t know until you ask

You may hesitate to ask for help since you are not sure of what the other person will say or think, or because they may turn you down. However, you may be surprised at how many people are not just able but willing to help.

Cultivate a spirit of cooperation

If you ask for help, the opposite person is more comfortable doing so as well. Helping each other can foster a spirit of cooperation, make work less boring and easier to get done; creating an altogether more convivial work atmosphere!
