10 Reasons to Stop Telling People to Have Kids

Now I love being a parent and adore my kids to the moon and back. However, I do get that there are those who do not want to have kids. I feel great sympathy for people who do not want to have kids are still constantly told that they must – because parenthood is endlessly rewarding, because it is ‘natural’ or because someone else wants grandkids to play with. There are plenty of excellent reasons to not to have kids and maybe not even get married:

It starts with this

It goes quickly from “get married to a nice boy/girl” to “hurry up or you will not find anyone” to “I'll find someone for you”

Because

Everyone's business is our business. Women of a certain age and also men; particularly retired men seem overcome with the urge to tell people how to live their lives.

Some people simply don’t want kids

That is the best reason to stop telling people to do something: they don’t want to do it! Why try and foist your views and expectations on them.

It’s optional!

News flash: birth control has been around for a long time --- one doesn’t have to have kids if they don’t want to.

Kids can be… difficult

You know they say parenting is the most difficult job in the world. Maybe someone doesn’t want to do that job! Because that picture? A very real possibility. And natural delivery or C-section, there is no painless way to become a parent --- not for the mother anyway.

It is not a punishable offence

Some people just don’t like kids. Don’t judge them, it’s not a crime.

In fact

We should thank childless people. There are well over 7 billion humans on earth. Do we really need more?

Kids are expensive!

It starts with diapers, goes on to toys, clothes, education… and do you know how much cheaper it is to take a holiday without kids! Maybe some people think there are better ways to spend that money; fly solo so to speak --- good for them.

Some may just prefer dogs

Don’t judge them --- this isn't a crime either.

A bunch of reasons

Sleepless nights, feeding, changing a million diapers, answering endless questions, keeping track of milestones, keeping them safe, making sure you're a good parent and don’t screw up your kid for life…parenting can be exhausting. If someone decides that they want neither the delights nor the horrors of parenthood, do not tell them otherwise --- it will sound like envy.
