Have you been accused of having no ambition of too little ambition? Me too! Do you sometimes question yourself if it’s OK to go through life without some particularly lofty goal? Me too; all the time! I’ve always felt that there are plenty of people out there who can and should be ambitious, I am just not one of them. And it’s perfectly fine… here’s why.

Sometimes ambitions can be unrealistic

They all tell us try, try and you will succeed. They also tell us where there is a will there is a way. Well, try telling this to that pug in the picture. Clearly he is trying and his will cannot be doubted.

Ambition is one thing, ability quite another

One can take music lessons their entire life but may never possess the mellifluous voice of Lata Mangeshkar or the vocal dexterity of Mohammad Rafi. Ramakant Achrekar himself may be your coach but you are very unlikely to be the next Sachin Tendulkar.

Some people are misguided by an overly good and overly misguided opinion of themselves. Others have an inflated sense of self because of well meaning but equally misguided parents. Others view the world altogether too optimistically through the bottom of a bottle of alcohol…

Everyone is special in their own way

A pawn cannot do what the king can but isn’t the reverse true as well! Clearly I don’t know enough about chess to use a chess metaphor but you do know what I mean!

Simply the desire to be happy and content and to see happiness among our loved ones is a very worthy ambition. Of course it is best if your ambition is a little different from this shark’s.

There are no unworthy ambitions

OK, except this one. Maybe looking for a job where you need do nothing except view inappropriate content may truly be a worthless ambition.

Ambitions can change

A swift, sharp dose of reality can prove very damaging to lofty, high ambitions. But like I said, being realistic is a good idea. Between the Nobel and a pizza, aiming for the latter is far less likely to cause disappointment.

The wrong ambition can be treacherous

Now for instance it is extremely fortunate that I never had the ambition to climb Mt Everest. If I had had such an ambition, there is a very strong likelihood of my mortal remains residing in a mountain crevice somewhere in a tangled, frozen mass.

So what if your ambitions are modest
