Delhi Rains Mean Flooding – On the Roads and on Twitter!

The rains come every year; bringing with them, the same set of troubles and problems. Each year our systems become paralysed – flooded roads, terrible traffic snarls, overloaded drainage, railways grinding to a halt. And yet our civic bodies seem to have no effective solutions. Citizens have little choice but to knuckle down and make the best of the situation; preferably with a dash of humour thrown in:

Water, water everywhere!

It takes just a few hours of reasonably heavy rain to choke the gutters, flood the roads and create logjams... apparently enough water to breed fish as this road user resignedly suggests on Twitter. As another tweet put it, “Ittu si barish, itta sara traffic”!

The situation is grim

The water logging is bad and it’s everywhere! The entire NCR region seemed to be reeling, unable to cope with some hours of heavy rain.

Late Kate!

Many were either late or unable to reach office at all. At least some people were secretly happy about giving their boss a legit reason for turning up late or not going to work on the day!

Sometimes this happens

This car driver was probably thanking his stars that his car was in the service lane and not on the choked main road…until this happened! It is not unusual to find the wheel of the vehicle descend into a large pot-hole or an open drain, as this tweet demonstrates.

But then this happens too!

In part two of the tweet, the Twitter user shares how a truck helped pull the car out as well. So while we see a lot of road rage, we also do see heartening instances of people helping each other.

With a smile and a song?

Well maybe not a smile – traffic snarls, car breakdowns, accidents, work and personal delays are certainly nothing to smile about. But maybe in the meantime music can help keep tempers cool? Maybe my rain playlist will help!

“God is punishing us”

This tweet refers to the ridiculous statement made by self-styled godman Chakrapani Maharaj, who is of the view that Kerala’s evil beef-eating habit was what resulted in the recent floods; that it was ‘nature’s punishment’.

Taxi? Forget it!

People may think that taking a cab may be an easier option than driving in rain, which can be really tough. However, actually finding cabs can be an even tougher challenge!

Taxi with a twist?

When there is no other option, even a tractor can seem like a luxurious sedan. Considering the fact that most of the traffic is moving even slower than the average tractor, this probably may be a more fun way to travel!

Smart city?

Not so much! This tweet seems to suggest that governments would do well to concentrate on basic infrastructure rather than entertaining fanciful and unrealistic notions of smart cities.

Practical difficulties

Any woman who has actually gone out in the rain wearing white knows this: white clothing and rain are a good combination only in Bollywood films.

Charity begins at home

#DonateForDelhi, suggests this tweet. After all the water logging seems perilously close to a flood-like situation.

The silver lining

When it’s wet and gloomy, it’s a good idea to look at the positive side of things – in this case, a rainbow which this twitter pic managed to capture.
