Fusion Has A New Meaning In Music These Days

Now while there is no doubt that some of the most diverse and innovative sounds are coming out of Bollywood these days, there is a lot going on in the world of non-filmi music as well. Fun, wonderful things are going on in the world of music in India and internationally. Unknown talent is coming to the fore, classical is combining with contemporary, people are mixing music with humour, using electronic devices and apps to create fresh new sounds and we are all having a lot of fun as a result of this!

Remember Kolaveri Di?

It was a phenomenal worldwide hit and there were rowing teams from small European nations doing flashmobs to it. Of course, there were any number of spoofs: the Marathi Kolaveri, the Gujarati Kolaveri, the acapella version and this rather besur exam version.

And the Gangman Style phenomenon?

Then while we were going crazy dancing to the portly Korean's song in India, people all over the world were going crazy making Gangman Style spoofs. Here’s one of my favourites (especially in view of the current mad craze surrounding the upcoming election for president of the United States).

Then I came across is spectacular version of Cheap Thrills

In recent times Sia’s Cheap Thrills was playing so often in my home, I had started to like it. And then I came across this desi, carnatic version of it. Now I really, really love this song – the vocals are excellent, the instrumentation really tight and very effective. For extra fun all the kids wear glasses. Listen in.

In case you were wondering….

Or have been living under a rock and have not heard Sia’s song yet, here is the original version. Not as good? I certainly felt so!

Here’s another desi reinterpretation of a wildly popular recent track

Here is an instrumental cover version of Love Me Like You Do from Fifty Shades of Grey done on the veena. Enjoy this fairly competent rendition by Wageshan.

The Indian version of the Friends song

Arguably one of the most popular American sitcoms ever to grace Indian TV screens, we are all familiar with the Friends theme. This is an excellent reinterpretation. I don’t thing I ever want to listen to the original again!

Check out the Game of Thrones theme as well

Another Carnatic classical version here; this time its an adaptation of the Game of Thrones theme.

Here is a more traditional rendition

This beautiful composition has been sung by various artistes and this is one of the top ones! The vocals are stunning; this is one talented musician!

The brave new breed of musicians

Musicians such as Mahesh Raghvan and his group Flair are creating these fresh new sounds that are pitch perfect, stunning when it come to musical aesthetics, very well arranged; which make for simply excellent new music. With very diverse musical backgrounds Raghvan brings together different styles and also experiments with technology to create these beautiful new compositions.
