The Trendsetters And Fashionistas Of The Pre-Independence Era

Do you know the actual trend setters of Indian fashion who were around even before Independence? Smart, elegant and icons in themselves, let's walk down the memory lane with the fashionistas of the pre-independence era.

1. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

The trendsetters list must begin with someone who possesses a highly sophisticated sense of fashion and so, our dearly loved chacha Nehru must come at the top of this list for he is the society’s paradigm of classic and tasteful fashion. The well known “Nehru Jacket”, “Jawahar Coat” and the signature red rose buttonhole are considered as hit political fashion couture.

2. Princess Niloufer

She was the daughter-in-law of the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan Mahboob Pasha, of Hyderabad. Her dressing style was not only popular in India but she was an inspiration to many women and the fashion police in various parts of Europe. An interesting fact for all you peeps right here; her fashion sense was so much admired by the media back then that she became the cover girl for several leading fashion magazines as well.

3. Mohammad Ali Jinnah

The founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah was a hit amongst the fashion mongers around the world. His perfectly starched shirts, hand-tailored suits and silk ties took the fashion world by storm. It was he who brought Monocles into the cool fashion accessory segment.

4. Maharani Sita Devi

Maharani of Kapurthala, she was known as one of the five best-dressed women on the earth. Needless to say, her sartorial choices made her a true diva in the fashion world. Adoring specially crafted sarees and handpicked jewelry on her beautiful body, she could give any of the post-independence models a run for their money.

5. Maharani Gayatri Devi

An acknowledged fashion icon and truly an epitome of Indian beauty and grace, Maharani Gayatri Devi was a charismatic fashionista of her time. Her extreme love for pastel coloured French Chiffon Saris and dark coloured glasses made her a trendsetter during the Pre-Indepence Era. Even Vogue described her as, "dream in sari and jewels". The  satin blouses with 10-inch sleeve was one of her most popular fashion statements which are in trend till date.
