Why Is #Harami Trending? How Rude!

Twitter is an acrimonious and abusive place. People routinely receive death and rape threats from those who don’t agree with them. However, it isn't often that an actual term, usually used as an abusive swear word, is seen to trend. So when #Harami started to trend, I wondered what it was all about. Harami, after all, means bastard; so not polite! Turns out this is the title of a new movie starring Emraan Hashmi and the first look was release resulted in this trending hashtag.

#Harami first look

An almost unrecognisable Hashmi sports long hair, spectacles and a beard in the image. He looks very different from the characters he typically plays. This is an Indo-American production directed by Shyam Madiraju.

Premiering at Busan

Located in the slums and streets of Mumbai, the movie is one about ‘hope and redemption’ according to the film's director. The movie will premiere at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival.

Appreciation

Fans of Hashmi were very appreciative of his ability to alter his persona to suit the role played.

What? Why?

People were wondering why an abusive term such as this was trending.

Some recalled these guys

Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi happen to be two of India’s biggest defaulters and absconders; perhaps more deserving of this epithet.

No abuse

Some didn’t like this trend.

Others did

Some were quite amused at the trend.

It was meme time

A hashtag like #Harami was bound to trigger memes. It did.

Like this

When the harami friend is uncharacteristically nice to you.

#Harami second look

Right now, China is literally at our gate; in fact, it has made incursions into Indian territory, with no sign of retreat.

Some recalled this

Rajya Sabha MP Sanjat Raut's name is now connected to this abusive word

Why

He had recently referred to Kangana Ranaut by a similarly abusive epithet when Ranaut referred to Mumbai as PoK.

Counterview

Ranaut currently enjoys Y grade security plus huge public support. However, there are those who believe that her actions in the Sushant Singh matter have been hypocritical and largely self-serving.

Some had this view

A large section of the media has recently restricted themselves to scurrilous trials-by-media and hounding of individuals against whom no evidence has been found. Reportage about real issues that the nation faces, have been conspicuous by their absence on prime time.

#Harami

There are many who are looking forward to watching the actual film Harami starring Emraan Hashmi. Others are just enjoying the Twitter trend #Harami.
