Venom – Most Disgusting ‘Superhero’ Yet?

Most of us don’t really like snakes and this new Marvel character - Venom seems to be some sort of snake-on-steroids-spiked-with-magic-potion type creature: slimy, slithery, with deadly fangs and a repulsively long tongue. Now I couldn’t watch the newly released Venom trailer without constantly grimacing and shutting my eyes and wishing it would be over already. However, as one more super from the Marvel stable, this upcoming movie seems to have everyone excited. I put it to you that this is the most disgusting and revolting superhero yet – see if you agree.

Venom trailer

Now as I understand it, this spinoff from the Spiderman films has to do with the Spiderman antagonist Eddie Brock. When Brock investigates something shady at the Life Foundation he encounters an alien symbiote (in the Marvel Universe this is something that combines with a human to create a super; like the spider that made Spidey). This thing/creature ‘bonds’ with Brock and the result is Venom, a truly objectionable looking creature with superpowers.

Lots of slithery stuff

I steeled myself to sit through and watch the entire trailer; it’s much more revolting than this benign little image here.

Like I said, really objectionable

The creature has some frankly scary teeth and even scarier, slithery tongue – altogether hideous. Maybe other creatures are uglier, but this one is a very, very strong contender.

Excited!

If you like that sort of thing, then this is the thing for you. I will frankly admit that I am too chicken to watch films like Alien, but a lot of perfectly fine people appear really, really excited about it and Venom’s similarity with it. I wish them joy for it.

Some context

The Spiderman 3 film featured Topher Grace as Eddie Brock and his alter ego Venom. This time around, the standalone feature film stars Tom Hardy in the title character. Some were busy comparing the two Venoms; if you're like me, you really, really don't care and think both are equally repulsive.

Man in the mask

Tom Hardy seems to have had a lot of experience playing evil/repulsive/have-to-put-them-in-restraints type characters. Presumably, he has done an excellent job here as well.

That’s what I said!

With the hundreds of superheroes flying/slithering/crawling/super speeding around, did we really need one more? Especially one so expressly ghastly? Clearly there are those that disagree with the general premise that the world has enough superheroes. So here's one more. Sigh!

Not happening!

The ‘real’ fans of Venom clearly not looking for a musical romance…well, it’s just as well, because they aren’t getting one.

If you're a ‘real fan’

Apparently, this is the sort of thing you're supposed to like if you're a real superhero fan. The others are apparently “idiotic dumbed down parodies”.

How nice!

This murderous, cannibalistic, ravening creature is a superhero? Whatever you say.

“Riot not Carnage”

Apparently the villain of the piece is someone called Riot and not Carnage. This apparently is vital information for the true blue Venom fan. Since riot and carnage are words that can often be used interchangeably, I have no idea why this makes any kind of difference. And wait a minute – the creature that promises to dismember and devour the organs of his victim is not the villain? Venom is a good guy? Well I don’t really want to find out. If you do, the movie releases on 5 October 2018.
