At the end of Top Gun Maverick opted to join the academy as an instructor and in the trailer of the new film Cruise's character is invited ordered back to the academy. The trailer hints at a confrontation between the ageing Maverick and the son of his late friend and colleague Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. In the first film, Goose and Maverick were in an accident during a sortie which Maverick survived but which killed Goose.
