The movie is about a gay man and a gay woman deciding to get married to get their families off their back. The story is about their relationships and all the imbroglios that this lands them in.
The movie has received good reviews over all as a movie that handles the subject sensitively and yet with humour.
The casting is spot on. The deft writing and caliber of the actors ensures that the film does not descend into farce.
A lot of people have their own experiences of homophobia or loved ones who may have struggled with it. Many of the themes in the film resonated or felt familiar/ personal.
Homosexuality may have been decriminalised years ago, but that doesn’t mean that homophobia is gone. Bigotry and prejudice against people of the LGBTQ+ communities is still rife. It forces people to live lives of secrecy and lies.
The movie isn't preachy. It says what it has to, using humour and suggestion said viewers. It addresses issues such as difficulties coming out of the closet, and the fact that same-sex couples still cannot marry or adopt.
Numerous tweets spoke about viewers, particularly older people who disapproved of the film, claiming it to be a waste of time, and portraying themes that will somehow ‘pollute’ society.
A gay couple watching the movie in a theatre heard disproving comments about the movie’s theme and snide ones about the lesbian scenes as well.
When one of the men was moved to tears during the coming-out scene, someone sneeringly remarked – this guy must be gay – and he replied yes I am gay – I am here with my boyfriend of 4 years. people at home know about it – deal with it.
