Virat Kohli is arguably the most glamorous cricketer in India, possibly the world. Together, Kohli and Anushka Sharma are India's most famous power couple so obviously anything the duo does is subject to the closest possible scrutiny. Recently the couple adoringly referred to as Virushka announced impending parenthood and social media collectively went into overdrive.
“And then, we were three! Arriving Jan 2021” This was the caption accompanying a picture of the happy couple.
The couple has legions of fans – obviously they all wished them well; #Virushka Pregnancy.
Comic Danish Sait gives us an overview of the sort of TV reportage that would likely follow the ‘momentous news’.
As predicted every single aspect of the announcement was examined and analysed – including clothes worn and price thereof. Comments below this tweet helpfully suggested where cheap knockoffs of Anushka's dress could be bought.
Fresh news quickly becomes old hat - as this tweet points out.
Indian media soon shifted its gushing, obsessive gaze away from other news (and non-news) to this.
This is just a pregnancy announcement; the actual arrival of the child will probably send these guys into paroxysms.
Now hopefully the obsessive attention that little Taimur Ali Khan receives will shift a little?
In recent times, couples have taken to announcing ‘we’re pregnant’; indicating that the father will be an equal, contributing half in the parenting process. Many, however, didn’t get the ‘woke’ reference.
Inevitably there were those who used this to make their own digs against the consistently poor performance of Kohli’s team at the IPL.
…Why not!
Of course this was also pointed out.
In cricket Kohli is known to be a good chaser – in other spheres as well, it could seem.
Sharma and Kohli tied the knot in December 2017 – all the dedicated busybodies on social media had concentrated their attention on trolling them about exactly this.
There are other young couples to harangue! More celebrities to troll about their lamentably childless state!
This tweet asked questions of Kohli - questions that are usually posed to working women having a baby.
The outrage (mostly from men) in reaction to this tweet pointed to two facts: one, that men and women are held to completely different standards and two, most people are quite unable to recognise sarcasm.
So while the #Virushka pregnancy accouchement gave fans of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma cause for cheer, others were making memes, having a laugh and even making a few valid points....Just another day in Twitterverse.
