The Police Are Now Meme-Savvy and People are Loving It!

A business today cannot hope to succeed without an online presence. Equally, government agencies and law enforcement agencies are now trying to create awareness using social media platforms and memes based on popular culture references. This has a dual benefit – it helps people view the police as approachable and accessible, and also draws attention to issues in a fun, memorable way.

Mumbai police makeover

Here the tweet makes a reference to the Batman-Superman superhero films; with particular reference to the film that featured the epic battle between the two, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Likening the Mumbai police to the ‘Dark Knight’, we are asked to think of the police as the city’s silent guardian and watchful protector.

The Harry Potter reference

This one draws on another highly popular movie series and the wizard Dumbledore; offering assistance to Mumbaikars to make ‘Mumbai truly magical’.

Reference to the Hunger Games

Here the Mumbai police is offering women the confidence to step out at night; the reassurance that their safety will be taken care of.

Mumbai police speaking in Jack Sparrow’s voice

The Pirates of the Caribbean series of films has been hugely popular in India; as is the protagonist Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp. This one draws attention to people being duped over the phone and online; cautioning people not to share sensitive information.

Guard against malware

Using the popular trope of the Trojan Horse legend, the police are telling people to beware of malware, and other Trojan horses that may attack electronic devices, compromise data and possibly defraud people.

Don’t text and drive

Many people who are sensible enough not to drink and drive, still think nothing of using their phones while driving: to speak to someone, check mail, send messages and more. This is a timely reminder not to do so.

“Be like Thor” says Bengaluru Police

Even the god of thunder wears a helmet the people of Bangalore are told. Accompanying the tweet are pictures featuring Chris Hemsworth from the popular new film, Thor: Ragnarok.

Flash, the new kid on the block

Flash is a new superhero – speed is his superpower – who was introduced to the world via Justice League, the new offering from the DC comics movie franchise. Bengaluru police promises to offer quick solutions for crimes, threats or commotions.

Lord of the Rings reference

If one is a Lords of the Rings fan, the horn allusion using Sean Bean's Boromir becomes clear. This one is meant to remind people about the futility of honking at red signals.

Evil spidey v good spidey

Spiderman is used here to remind people not to let criminals steal their identity. The response to the memes has been quite positive, with many appreciating the humour and the innovative way in which attention is being focused on serious issues. The memes also start discussions around local complaints, and draw responses from the police authorities; another beneficial impact of the meme-savvy police.
