The Gulabo Sitabo Trailer is Funny & Quirky, So Are the Memes

Thanks to the COVID-19 lockdown, release of some big banner films such as the much-awaited Salman Khan starrer Radhe, have been postponed. Others such as Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo have decided to take the online-release route. After what seems like a long drought of trailers, we saw the release of the Gulabo Sitabo trailer which is promising and funny and delightful. In view of still-shut theatres and multiplexes, the movie will release on Amazon Prime on 12 June 2020.

Gulabo Sitabo - Official Trailer

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Vijay Raaz and others, this one is directed by Shoojit Sircar of Piku fame.

Priceless ‘jodi’

The film – based on traditional glove puppet pair of Uttar Pradesh of the same name – promises to be engaging and entertaining; just not in the usual Bollywood formulaic way.

Tom & Jerry

If chai-sutta is a priceless Jodi, so are these two.

Bachchan in fine form

We see a barely-recognisable, curmudgeonly old Bachchan – lending himself completely to the role, complete with makeup, body language, gruff voice, mannerisms and terrible teeth.

A property dispute?

The story seems to revolve around a ramshackle looking property – a so-called ‘haveli’, its old owner and tenant.

Ayshmann Khurrana is the poor but combative tenant, constantly at loggerheads with his old landlord.

Irreverent

This is not exactly the 'sanskaari' young man respectful of his seniors.

The line made for memes

The young man tells the old man to stop yelling because he may get a heart attack.

Also made for memes

I didn’t know you were so poor – if ever there was a line made for memes, it is this!

See?

Versatile and meme-worthy!

This is all of us

We’ve all filtered price from ‘low to high’ at some point, haven’t we?

‘Adopt me’

When there seems to be no way out, the tenant suggests adoption to his landlord.

A line for the times

This one is relevant, in view of the recent brouhaha about producing papers to prove citizenship.

Great writing

Set in Lucknow, the film promises a local flavour in terms of the backdrop as well as the local dialect/accent.

This will be fun!

Indian audiences, starved for movie releases during the past months of lockdown are delighted with the Gulabo Sitabo trailer and are looking forward to watching the movie when it premieres on Amazon Prime on 12 June.
