First, it shone brightly as a US-Japanese TV show, that morphed school age youngsters into neophytes who were superheroes. And now, it is back as a full-fledged movie, soon to go into post production. There's no stopping the Power-Rangers.
What was once a close-knit unit of young novices who wanted to get a little thrill by punching up some goons and baddies (and fighting neophytes) are now fully skilled exponents of ethereal combat. The trailer of the soon-to-be-released Power Rangers reveals the sassy teens to have found strength as discovered from special powered gems from ancient rocks.
The movie shows the transformation of a group of youngsters, before the prime of their youth, going from being outcasts into becoming a battle hardened army of Power Rangers, ready to take on their enemies.
Since, it's just a teaser aimed at giving audiences subtle glimpses of the much-awaited action sci-fi thriller, you get to see the minute traces of transformation of free-wheeling youngsters into becoming dynamite fighting machines, with all details kept strictly under wraps. The electric suits sashaying the might of the young fighters lends material substance and value to the Power Rangers seen hanging out at dark rocks, outside their city.
The fully loaded new action franchise is a significant shift from the meager outfit on the TV in the bygone era. The movie is slated to star Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Bill Hader and Bryan Cranston.
Making heads turn with the teaser release from the Power Rangers franchise, there is no doubt that the makers wanted the audience to take the action franchise a lot more seriously, since it first appeared on the TV decades before.
This is evident from a bustling film budget of about $150 million and having stars of the high-repute of Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad fame.
There is little doubt about the reigning success of original TV shows over their menial and moderately impressive big-screen adaptations. While the very successful Fantastic Four TV Series was much liked, it's movie adaptation by Josh Trank failed to fire on the box office, appearing as a drab lull, tanking and stretching audiences for attention for hours together. Could Power Rangers have the same fate? We will have to wait and see!
The original Power Rangers series was marvelous and a compelling action adventure that had a bit of everything- good hearted laughs and teen-power. The fluid adaptation of Japanese popular show Super Sentai was a glorious free kick at TV screens by Haim Saban. But then, a lot of success of the popular 90s series was for its gloriously nutty martial arts action and a pseudo-psychedelic blend of quick wits and punchy narrative. Can the big film replicate the TV success it found? Let's hope so!
