Netflix Shows and Movies to Watch Out For This September

It is always exciting to know about upcoming movies and TV shows – to look forward to getting lost in the stories and worlds that creative minds think up for us. Here is a look at some of the movies and shows that we can look forward to in September along with the trailers and a short synopsis of what to expect:

The Spy

Starring Sasha Baron Cohen, this series debuts Season One on Netflix this weekend. Set in the 1960s, it follows the story of Eli Cohen, an Israeli clerk turned secret agent. He is required to go undercover into Syria for several years to ferret out information for Mossad in a dangerous mission.

Zodiac

This is not a new movie but is recently added to the Netflix playlist. The 2007 movie (there were several made on the same subject with variations in the name) stars Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Jake Gyllenhaal from a pre-Marvel era and follows the story about a notorious serial killer known as The Zodiac. The thriller is based on a book which in turn is based on true events of the 1960s and 70s and is critically acclaimed as a ‘true-crime thriller’.

Tall Girl

She is 16 and is 6'.1” tall. This one looks like a nice fun rom-com where the girl goes through her trials and tribulations before she comes to term with who she is and what she fears. This looks like one for the teeny-boppers (does using that term date me?)

Criminal

This is an original Netflix series and the first season will be available from 20th September. This consists of 12 distinct and unique crime stories set in the UK, France, Spain and Germany. Audiences get to step into the interrogation rooms along with the suspects accused of serious crimes.

Up in the Air

This 2007 film is avialabale on Netflix since 1 September. Based on a book, this one stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, and Danny McBride. Clooney’s character Ryan is a corporate "downsizer"; in other words his job is to fire people. It was nominated for six Oscars and won many other awards.

Blinded by the Light

I am personally looking forward to this one. Directed by Gurinder Chadha (of Bend It Like Beckham fame), this movie is based on the book Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor. The book is based on the life of the author; particularly his love for the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen. This coming of age movie is about a British Pakistani boy played by Viveik Kalra. Set in the 1980s, this is the story about a young man coming to terms with his identity, dealing with his repressive parents as well as racism while discovering the beauty of music. This one is coming to the streaming platform on 6 September.

Silver Linings Playbook

This is another one that I am looking forward to watching and comes to Netflix on 15 September. The rom-com stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker and Anupam Kher. It is the story of a man with bipolar disorder and a woman with borderline personality disorder coping with their situation as well as their relationship with each other.

The Da Vinci Code

If you haven’t seen this, you must – if only to watch the movie that tries to do justice to one of the best thrillers about religious lore and symbolism ever written. Though the movie represents a mere fraction of the incredible research and detail that went into the book, it is a decent attempt to narrate a truly gripping story. Starring Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Sir Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina, this one comes to Netflix on 16 September.

And then there is also the original Netflix series produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chilles Productions, Bard of Blood, which everyone is looking forward to. Watch Emraan Hashmi play RAW agent Kabir Anand along with Vineet Kumar Singh, Sobhita Dhulipala, Kirti Kulhari, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ivan Sylvester Rodrigues and others.
