Movies to Watch This April on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Hotstar

Just as we thought we’d seen the end of the pandemic and the many restrictions it placed on us, we encounter the second wave of COVID-19. That second wave is now well and truly underway, and we continue to do things the way we learned to do over this last year, including watching movies online. So here’s what you can watch online over streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar.

Schindler’s List, Netflix

In my experience, this is a film that leaves an indelible mark on the brain and the heart when you watch it: heart-wrenching, but also heartwarming. This Steven Spielberg film is about Nazi Germany and the brave streak of humanity that ran through those darkly horrifying times of World War II. Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes feature in this Black and White film that won 7 Oscars and frequently features in lists about top films of all times.

Shrek

This is a movie that turns every popular fairy story trope on its head and creates the most delightfully unconventional modern fairy tale ever. The ‘hero’ is a creep, the ‘ogre’ is the hero with a heart of gold, and the ‘heroine’ is a green ogress who does not turn into the beautiful princess in the end and the fiery dragon is a really nice girl! If you’ve not seen Shrek I recommend watching it as well as the sequels Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After (though the first two films were easily the best).

Inception, Amazon Prime

This Christopher Nolan movie, largely regarded as one of the most complex and difficult-to-understand movies, was recently added to Amazon Prime. The sci-fi film is about a thief (Leonardo DiCaprio) who infiltrates the minds of people and then steals their information. The movie also stars Ken Watanabe, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Michael Caine and others. This film is famous for not being understood at first viewing and then having to be viewed again just so that one could make sense of it.

Johnny English, Amazon Prime

Let me confess, this is the only kind of ‘spy thriller’ I like. I have very little time for the James Bond genre, but I like the accidentally-effective, bumbling but well-meaning spy… particularly when played by the brilliant Rowan Atkinson. This is the first of the film series, featuring a hilarious send-up of all the oft-used spy movie tropes. Later we had Johnny English Reborn in 2018 and Johnny English Strikes Again in 2011 as well. This has been added to Amazon Prime this month.

The Personal History of David Copperfield, Disney Hotstar

This comedy-drama is based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel and will be released on Disney Hotstar on 11 April. Dev Patel plays the titular role with Tilda Swinton, Lugh Laurie, and others. This film has been favourably received by critics and audiences alike. It is described as fresh, funny, charming and wonderfully entertaining; a film that reinvents the Victorian novel while still managing to pay homage to it. One I'm really looking forward to.

Nomadland, Disney Hotstar

This is another film I'm truly looking forward to watching when it starts steaming on 30 April. The movie about an older woman who converts her van into a mobile home and turns into a modern-day nomad has already won many awards and has been nominated for 6 Oscar awards. Check out these movies releasing this April on Netflix, Prime Video and Disney Hotstar – I aim to watch/re-watch them all.
