Indian Cinema’s Iconic ‘Jodis’ You Should Watch Now If You Haven’t

Anyone who knows me at all knows about my deep and abiding love for Hindi film music. The songs that so many of us love, are greatly enhanced by the video; by the actors that give life to the melodies. Some Hindi film couples have become iconic for their on-screen chemistry. Here are some of the best: maybe these lovely songs will give you some ideas for movies to watch now during the COVID-19 lockdown:

Raj Kapoor-Nargis

The two starred together in as many as 16 films including Aag, Barsaat, Shree 420, Chori Chori, Jagte Raho and of course the timeless love story Awaara. It is thought that a real life love story was behind the amazing on-screen chemistry of this pair.

Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman were paired together in some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films such as Pyaasa, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam and Kaagaz ke Phool. For me it was a tough choice: waqt ne kiya or the title track of Chaudhvin ka Chaand. Though the latter is a simply stunning song made up of the most extravagant expressions of love, waqt ne kiya, is to my mind one of the most beautiful Hindi film songs ever made.

Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore

Amar Prem, Aavishkar, Aradhna, Safar… there were so many memorable movies starring these two. One may argue that the beautiful, timeless love story Amar Prem has the best music. However, the songs of Safar have a special place in my heart --- particularly Jeevan se Bhari – a song so achingly beautiful; so full of love and longing.

Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh

This real-life pair is one of Bollywood's abiding love stories. On-screen as well, the two were paired in many movies such as Khel Khel Mein, Rafoo Chakkar, Kabhie Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Doosra Aadmi and others. Cute and playful would describe this screen pairing; particularly this song from the surprisingly suspenseful Khel Khel Mein.

Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha

Do Anjaane, Mr. Natwarlal, Muqaddar ka Sikander, Suhaag and of course, Silsila which showcased the angry young man in a very different avatar, had this jodi. The movie was thought to tell a story similar to the real-life extramarital affair of the film's lead pair. If there is anything to rival the beautiful flowers in this song, it would be the stunning Rekha herself.

Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla

These two personified innocent young love in the Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and in songs such as the hugely popular ae mere humsafar. They also starred together in other films such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Love Love Love, Ishq and quite a few other rather forgettable ones.

Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit

These two starred together in many films such as Ram Lakhan, Parinda, Beta, Kishan Kanhaiya and many others. However, the standout film starring these two would have to be Tezaab a passionate love story that defined romance for young couples of the time. Discounting Dixit's questionable clothing, this song was all about the sort of passion that was willing to die for love.

Shahrukh Khan-Kajol

SRK has been in numerous love story films, but his pairing with Kajol has always occupied a special place in the hearts of audiences. Apart from the iconic Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejaenge there many more: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, My Name Is Khan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dilwale. The movie (Dilwale the much touted reunion movie) may not have lived up to much but this is my personal fave song of these two.

Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai

These two haven’t done too many films together; notably Jodha Akbar, Guzaarish and Dhoom 2. However, they deserve a mention simply for filling up the screen with gorgeousness each time they were paired together.

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone

Notably, they have been starred together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali films such as Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat only. The on-screen chemistry of the two has been no less than explosive each time.

This list reminds me that there are some films mentioned that I myself haven’t watched yet – maybe there are some ideas in there for you during the COVID-19 lockdown?
