The Internet Movie Database or IMDb as we know it is the most influential and widely quoted rating of movies, TV shows and streaming content. While some believe that the IMDb rating system is flawed, this is still the most highly regarded rating system. Anbe Sivan (2003) is the top Indian film among the IMDb 250 top-rated films the 1971 classic Anand features third on that list just above Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece Pather Panchali (1955). Starring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan this film about the terminally ill but optimistic Anand is littered with classic scenes and iconic songs. This 1971 film of Hrishikesh Mukherjee remains the highest-rated IMDb Hindi film with a score of 8.6 out of 10. The movie is available on Hotstar in India. At numbers 2 and 3 are Black Friday, the 2004 film about the Mumbai serial bomb blasts and Khosla ka Ghosla (2006), the wryly funny film about the struggles of a middle-class man versus a crooked property dealer.
The very violent but seminal film by Anurag Kashyap about the mafia-like intergenerational feud between criminal families stands by itself for uniqueness and realism is at no 4. By List Order, this is the top-rated Hindi film on IMDb. Featuring a terrific star cast of Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Tigmanshu Dhulia & others, it is available on Amazon Prime as well as on YouTube for free as well as to rent/buy. This is followed by Queen (2013) starring Kangana Ranaut, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Hera Pheni (2000) and Udaan (2010).
One of the most memorable roles of Irrfan Khan, this is the story about a top athlete who turned to dacoity. The 2012 film is available on Netflix as well as on YouTube (free as well as to rent/buy). This film is followed by the classic Sholay, Chak De! India and Black.
This is one of the silliest films ever made, featuring the stupidest characters imaginable. It shouldn’t be but manages to be hilarious and remain hilarious even 26 years after it was released. Starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor and others, this one is available on Netflix as well as YouTube (free as well as to rent/buy). Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and A Wednesday (2008) finish the list of top 15 IMDb Hindi films.
This incredibly bad, tacky film of 2008 now has a cult-like status for its awfulness as well as for its maker/lead actor Kamaal R Khan. In case you want to know why this film rejoices in the top bottom spot (1.4 IMDb rating), it is available on YouTube for free (because who would pay for it). This is followed by the movie that should never have been made, much less remade Himmatwala (2013) the truly execrable Humshakals (2014).
This unspeakable film has a strangely impressive star cast: Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Manisha Koirala, Suneil Shetty. Few ever heard of this film which also starred Arman Sonu and Sonu Nigam which was about a wait for it… a shapeshifting snake out for revenge. Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Jaya Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon and others, this movie couldn’t decide whether it was a mythological drama, fantasy or just a fancy dress parade. It was the Bachchan scion's nth chance to make good, but it didn’t work with audiences. One IMDb reviewer urges you to ‘save yourself’ from the movie which another calls the most ‘bakwas’ movie of the year and yet another feels is the worst movie of all time.
By list order, this is one of the worst-rated Hindi films on IMDb. That title, replete with the deliberate but gag-worthy spelling errors is the actual name of a film where Himesh Reshammiya is a ‘rock star’ that everyone (polite laugh) lusts after. It was not the musician's first misguided foray into acting, but it underlined the fact that Reshammiya should definitely not give up his day job as a musician. His Karzzzz (2008) is also on the list with 2.1 stars. So in the IMDb list of worst Hindi movies, Reshammiya has the dubious distinction of multiple entries.
