Due to be held in the months of September and October, this is one of the biggest textile shows hosted by the city. Dubai’s international film festival is ranked among the top 15 in the world. It’s no wonder that cinema aficionados from all over the world flock to Dubai to get a first-hand account of the performing arts. The Dubai film festival was conceived in the year 2004. Since then it is held every year in the month of December attracting films from the Arab world and beyond. During this time the city attracts many interns, wannabe artists, film celebrities, musicians, volunteers and viewers. There are a host of programmes featuring question answer series, presentations and special appearances. You get to see eye popping, red carpet glamour as well as an exquisite exchange of different cultures.
Be ready for a well-orchestrated display of the Keith Waterhouse play Jefferey Bernard is Unwell. The live performance will be given at the performing area called ‘the junction’ at Alerskal Avenue. The play is a successful and much sought after production of the life and times of the English journalist Jeffery Bernard. The play is poignant, comic and tells everyone how Jeffery struggles to complete his spectator column, given his bohemian late night lifestyle. It will run between August 9 and August 11.
Ladies, line up for the glorious tradition of perfume making. On august 11, Alerkal Avenue which is Dubai’s art hub presents a workshop on perfume making under the summer theme ‘Sensing memory’. Perfume artist Mona Haddad will give a free and live presentation of creating perfumes and matching these unique smells to various personalities and people. Using sachets and mixing essential oils, participants can make their own perfumes and take them home.
An all-female crew has recently produced a heart rending documentary showcasing the stories and aspirations of ambitious female entrepreneurs. The film gives a candid and open account of brand new start-ups of successful women as well as industries that have turned into multimillion dollar establishments. Between August 22 and August 24 don’t miss the spectacular celebrations of this Islamic festival. Marking the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage to mecca, Eid Al hadha is one of Islam’s holiest celebrations. It is celebrated with great pomp and style, getting together with friends and family, cooking up a storm as well as giving money to the poor and needy. Dubai comes to life at night with its beautiful display of fireworks and concerts.
