It’s the weekend again and some of us still have no option but (or are lucky enough to be able) to batten the hatches and hunker down at home for a weekend of OTT viewing. Here are some of the options: Haseen Dillruba and America: The Motion Picture on Netflix, Cold Case and The Tomorrow War on Amazon Prime Video and Collar Bomb on Disney+ Hotstar are some new releases.
The movie stars Tapsee Pannu as Rani, Vikrant Massey as Rishabh (Rishu) and Harshvardhan Rane as Neel Tripathi. Tapsee is seen in a role similar to the one she did in Manmarziyaan where she played a woman who follows her own heart but is confused about what she really wants. Here she is married to Rishu but has an affair with Neel. The movie starts with Rishu’s murder and tells the story in a series of flashbacks; storytelling sessions at a police station inspired by Hindi fiction novels. Critics say the movie starts strong but tends to go haywire towards the end. In this weekend offering, a promising premise is let down by poor writing and a convoluted plot.
The movie stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as ACP Sathyajith who is investigating a murder committed over a year ago. This is a murder-mystery / paranormal story where the spirit of the murdered girl tries to contact the living, a journalist called Medha. There is a psychic who deals in the occult, a complex investigation and a valuable inheritance in the mix. The movie receives a favourable reception for its innovative storyline, but many critics felt that it did not fulfil its promise.
This is an animated film that takes a humorous and quirky look at the history of America’s founding. It has an unlikely foul-mouthed swashbuckling George Washington voiced by Channing Tatum, a female version of Thomas Edison voiced by Olivia Munn, Will Forte as Abraham Lincoln and various other characters. The movie may be about the past but definitely has a 21st-century sensibility and vocabulary. This one released on Netflix on 30 June and looks intriguing.
I thought they had run out of all the ways for America to save the world, but they found a new way to present the done-to-death formula. This is a war that takes place 30 years in the future and is recruiting people from today. Chris Pratt plays Dan, an Iraq vet and now teacher who steps up to enlist for this future war and also meets up with his own adult daughter who is a colonel in the future. Seems like a good watch for people who enjoy sci-fi action films.
This crime thriller stars Jimmy Shergill who is a cop racing against time to defuse a suicide bomb and save the lives of kids in a school among others. There is a backstory of the policeman, a mystery to uncover and more. However, this one releases on Disney+ Hotstar on 9 July. Right now you have many others to choose from.
