A lot of Indians would rate Netflix higher than other streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Hotstar in terms of content quality and variety. However, Netflix continued to deter a lot of us because of its higher price point. Netflix recently slashed its subscription rates in India and ‘Hurray’ said the tweeple.
The Netflix basic plan costs Rs. 499 a month and the four-screen plan is Rs. 799 a month – way steeper than other streaming platforms available.
Now however a Rs. 199 a month plan has been introduced. Many are very happy; particularly those who watch content mainly on their handheld devices.
This new Rs. 199 plan is a mobile only plan that lets you “Watch on 1 mobile phone or tablet at a time in Standard Definition. Download videos on 1 phone or tablet.”
The Rs. 500 plan became the Rs. 499 plan. Similarly, the Rs. 650 and Rs. 800 plans came down the princely sum of Rupee 1.
This subscription is valid only for one screen and then can only be used on smartphones and tablets. This cannot be mirrored to the TV or an external display.
The announcement of the new cheaper plan from Netflix delighted a lot of people.
For some, this was life-changing. Really? That is a little sad.
Here I come! Those who had never used Netflix are now tempted.
Then there were some who went…Wait a bit – markets are going to fall further.
There were those who bought the new monthly subscription right away – it was just what they were waiting for.
Some were finally able to afford Netflix and they were very pleased about it.
Those who depend upon pirated streaming sources or torrents for their entertainment fix were like… ho hum.
I have just one question – what in the world is a Netflix seller?
Right now, there are many viewers who want to simply watch TV or prefer the other OTT (over the top) streaming services such as Alt Balaji, Eros, Sony LIV etc.
There will always be those of us who use Netflix only thanks to others who actually pay for it - 199 or 799.
