Filmfare awards 2018 – Who Won, Who Got Trolled & Who Reacted

The ‘only awards that matter’, or the 63rd Filmfare Awards were presented recently. Honouring technical and artistic excellence in the Hindi film industry, these awards are among the oldest and most respected in Bollywood. Here are some highlights of the Filmfare Awards 2018, a look at who won, some highlights and reactions:

No ‘starry’ awards

With Hindi Medium winning the best film award, Irrfan Khan getting the best actor award and Vidya Balan bagging the best actress award, these awards were something of a departure from the norm. Also, surprising was that the coveted Best Director award went to Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari for Bareilly Ki Barfi

Other notable awards

The critic’ award for the best film went to the superlative film, Newton. Rajkumar Rao won the critics’ award for the best actor for Trapped, while Zaira Wasim won the critics’ award for the best female actor for Secret Superstar. The highly acclaimed, wryly funny Death in the Gunj won best debut director award for Konkona Sen Sharma.

The lifetime achievement award

This award appears to be something of an afterthought; at least the recipient of the award thought so. When yesteryears star Mala Sinha was given the Lifetime Achievement award, she recalled how she had never won a Filmfare during her heyday and that the awards don’t really mean anything.

Who got trolled

Urvashi Rautela was well received on the red carpet and the shutterbugs loved what she wore. But that didn’t stop the trolls from slut-shaming her; many saying that her outfit amounted to a criminal offence. Of course, there were many who came to her defence, saying that a woman has the right to wear what she wants.

More red carpet appearances

Some current recipients such as Rajkumar Rao and Vidya Balan as well as some beauties who ruled the roost in the past such as Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta were also photographed on the red carpet.

Outfit of the evening

He is known for his outlandish outfits, so it wasn’t much of a wonder that Ranveer Singh turned up wearing this! ‘This’ is a suit featuring the posters of his fave films from the 80s and 90s.

Best dressed?

Some publications opined that Sonam Kapoor was among the best dressed on the red carpet in that strange knee length suit. Then there was Diya Mirza in her tiered gown and others who were rather more elegantly dressed.

Ms World made an appearance

The current Ms India who went on to win the Ms World title Manushi Chillar was also spotted on the red carpet and then later on the stage with the stars.

Someone tweeted this

Perhaps it was to explain away that fact that Salman Khan's movies such as Tubelight and Tiger Zinda Hai did not even get a mention at the awards.

Others were trying to understand…

…How people are nominated and what the criteria for those nominations are...

Best moments

Here are some of the best moments of the Filmfare Awards 2018 night: SRK bowing to Ranveer Singh’s outlandish outfit, the two shaking a leg with Manushi, Jackie Shroff kissing Rekha’s hand and more.
