Emily in Paris or Mirzapur 2? This Will Help You Decide

Emily in Paris was recently launched on Netflix and the trailer of Mirzapur – season 2 was released recently which will be coming to Amazon Prime Video. Both series have recently been creating a lot of buzz. Which one should you watch? What is worth your time and what isn't? The tweets and memes will help you decide:

Emily in Paris trailer

It seems pretty straightforward – the American girl transplanted into Paris – beautiful, romantic, historic Paris with its charming cafes, uncomfortable apartments and of course handsome men.

Lily Collins as Emily

Lily Collins is pretty, wide-eyed and very American with all the entitlement and cultural ignorance that denotes.

The American in Paris

The series is touristy and features all the Paris landmarks; it’s all very pretty.

All the clichés

The show is full is full of all the clichés we expect: the French are arrogant, need visitors to speak French, don’t shower much, aren't very hard working and of course all the men are flirts.

Then there is this guy

The character of Gabriel – Emily’s neighbour; a chef and the object of her affection – played by Lucas Bravo is much appreciated. The chef is rather dishy if you'll forgive the pun.

Loving it

The locales, the food, the wine --- a lot of people are binge-watching it – and loving it.

And not so much

Some didn’t like the series at all. They thought it was frivolous, overstated show, unsubtle and repetitive in the sort of tropes it uses.

In a nutshell

Emily in Paris is a fun, lighthearted rom-com; it is not meant to be profound or serious viewing.

Mirzapur – season 2

This Amazon Prime series is the antithesis: set in the badlands of UP; one of the least developed and most lawless of places, it is gritty and violent and not at all pretty. This releases on 24 October 2020.

Popular genre

Mirzapur (and now the second season) is of a popular ‘Wasseypur’ genre: full of grey characters, a story about the criminal-police nexus, with lots of profanity, violence and so on.

The memes started

As soon as the trailer of Mirzapur 2 came out, the meme templates were out and soon it was raining memes.

Mirzapur 2 memes

Even the Mumbai police are getting into the act.

This line

The marvellous Pankaj Tripathi, and this line of his has become very popular with the meme makers.

#BoycottMirzapur2 was also trending

As soon as some high profile content is released, people find some or other reason why it should be boycotted. This has now become so routine, that people barely take notice.

Some also used the #Mirzapur2 hashtag to make a comment on current politics.

Violence

The series is known to be violent; with some rather innovative means of doing away with people – like this.

Lots of guns

The first season had a lot of violence; the same is expected for the second season.

It’s all about power

This season seems to have some unconventional claimants for the role of the criminal ‘godfather’. So, there are plenty of viewers looking forward to the release date of 24th October when Mirzapur 2 releases on Amazon Prime. Meanwhile, there is something light and frothy on offer in the form of Emily in Paris on Netflix.
