Dalgona Candy, Bollywood Movie Luck & Other Reasons Netflix's Squid Game Is In the Headlines

I watched the trailer of the new Netflix show Squid Game and I was horrified at the sort of dark and nightmarish dystopian story it suggests. I instantly knew that this is not a show I'm going to waste many precious hours on. However, the success of the show suggests that many don’t think like me.  The Korean series is very popular and is making headlines for these and other reasons, but first, the trailer:

Squid Game trailer

The Netflix Series is captioned, “Survive or die. Who will live to see 45.6 billion won?” The story is that of a series of deadly games where losers are eliminated by death and other fun ways. There is a big $38 million prize for the winner/survivor. I thought to myself this is like the Korean version of Hunger Games!

Dalgona candy

The second game in the show has players playing a game involving dalgona candy. This has seen the sales of this candy shoot up since the series aired.

DIY

People are trying their hand at making this candy with some of the motifs from the show.

Dangerous Dalgona

It’s dangerous in the series – perhaps less so in real life unless one is a really bad confectioner.

Now a meme

The children’s games played in the series have these figures – that are now a meme.

Terrifying

They are supposed to be children’s games that the characters are playing – but the result of those games is quite terrifying.

It resonates

The series resonates with people – but it should be billionaire not millionaire.

Invested

People are really invested in the show that has nine episodes, and which was released in September 2021.

Something awful?

Clearly something awful happens in episode 6?

People want Season 2

Clearly that was a cliffhanger ending – because people want more.

Meanwhile gamers

Minecraft gamers have been talking about the show – so now fans are abuzz.

And

…Fan art is happening.

Cult status?

Perhaps Squid Game is going to achieve the sort of cult following that other series like Money Heist have? Those faceless characters and the red hoodies seem ominous.

Meanwhile

Bollywood fans seem to have that déjà vu feeling.

Luck

Squid Game reminded a lot of people of the 2009 Hindi film Luck starring Mithun Chakraborty, Shruti Haasan, Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Danny and others.
