Coming Up On Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar This April

I don’t think streaming services have ever meant so much to people as they do right now during the coronavirus lockdown. So you can catch up with all the reading you meant to do or pursue that hobby or give the house some deep cleaning. Or you can just take the path of least resistance and be a couch potato and indulge in the plethora of entertainment options available to anyone with a decent net connection. Here is what is on offer this April on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar:

American Beauty

This Oscar-winning film comes to Netflix this month. The drama takes a look at the superficial smugness of ‘happy’ families, with their underlying hypocrisy and dysfunction. With its complex themes of materialism, desire, obsession, adultery, paternal love, this film leaves the viewer shaken.

Babe

If you have not seen this adorable little film about the little pig who thinks he is a sheepdog, do it to increase the sum of joy in your life. This feel-good comedy features some seriously cute critters, plus it is just a really sweet story.

Never Have I Ever

This is a new series from Mindy Kaling and it’s about Devi Vishwakumar and her desires from school life in the new academic year. This coming of age story is supposed to be based on Kaling’s own childhood.

Rocketman

This is the story of Sir Elton John – an extraordinary life by any standards. This award-winning film comes to Amazon Prime this April; the first chance for most Indians to watch this 2019 film.

Shikara

This film based on true events follows the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir valley three decades ago and will stream on Amazon Prime. This Vidhu Vinod Chopra film is a love story set against the backdrop of the genocide and the exodus of a whole community within their own country.

Four More Shots (Season 2)

This is Amazon Prime series follows the trials and tribulations of four women – their professional life, sex life and most importantly their relationship with each other. This is the Indian version of Sex and the City – funny, a little silly and very self-indulgent. Season 2 starts in April this year.

Ready or Not

This is a comedy thriller with a significant amount of gore thrown in for good measure. A bride has to hide from her new family in a deadly game of hide and seek. This 2019 film comes to Hotstar.

Disney+ Hotstar

From 3 April 2020, viewers will be able to access content form Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Subscribers can also avail benefits like unlimited downloads of all Disney+ movies and shows, as well as “personalised recommendations based on viewing patterns.” Meanwhile, there are a bunch of these new, recent, and classic Hindi and English films you may want to catch up with on Hotstar.
