Check Out Trailers of Two Women Centric Films: Mulan and Charlie's Angels

Many of us would remember the 1998 Disney animated musical Mulan; a film based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. The trailer for the live action version of Mulan dropped. Most of us would have seen some or the other version of the Charlie's Angel films or the original TV series from the 1970s. The trailer of the 2019 version of Charlie’s Angels also dropped recently. Check out the trailers and reactions to them:

Trailer Charlie’s Angels 2019

It is the same premise – three gorgeous, tough women who get into all sorts of different situations in the course of the jobs as detectives, part of Charles Townsend’s detective agency.

Loving it

The girls are gorgeous and badass and go around beating up the bad guys. They have a range of disguises to help them along. People are loving it.

The new ‘angels’

The roles of the three detectives will be reprised by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska in the 2019 film.

Some thought they were perfect

Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu played the three angels in the 2000 and the 2003 (Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle) films.

Coming this November

Charlie’s Angels releases 15 November 2019. The movie is also co-written and directed by Elizabeth Banks. Many applauded the film as a woman-centric film helmed by a woman.

Another remake?

Many commentators expressed their ire that Hollywood kept making remakes and seemed to have run out of original ideas. However, others clarified that this movie is a continuation of the earlier films and not a reboot/remake.

Meanwhile

A while back, Katrina Kaif had expressed the view that she would like to be in a Hindi remake of this movie with Aishwarya Rai and Sonam Kapoor. Well that didn’t happen.

Mulan 2019 trailer

Like the animated version, this movie also traces the journey of a woman warrior who wages a literal battle as well as a figurative battle against traditionalism. Liu Yifei as Mulan has to assume the disguise of a man to discover her true potential. “Quiet, composed, graceful, disciplined… these are the qualities we see in Mulan”

Different than the animated version

Some of the cute side characters from the animated version will not be seen in the live action film. Some people did not approve.

War action drama film

The 2019 film is a war action drama film, not the Disney-fied animated musical version we saw earlier. As such it will be closer to the original fable of Mulan.

Story of a strong woman

She loves her family and is a dutiful daughter. But she is also a woman who follows her heart. Mulan’s central premise is that of a strong woman – inside and out.

Thumbs up!

The Asian community all over the world has come out in support – because cultural representation is important.
