R Madhavan said something that most people don’t seem to agree with – that the movie can be better than the book. The common view is that the movie is never as good as the book it is based on – but I think this is a slightly snooty view. So here’s what R Madhavan said and how Chetan Bhagat responded. In the end, the reason for all this seemed to be the new Netflix show Decoupled (trailer below).
Are movies better than books or the other way around?
A lot of his popular books have been made into movies: Five Point Someone (3 Idiots), Three Mistakes of My Life (Kaipo Chhe), Two States, Half Girlfriend etc. For him, the books are better.
He played Farhan in 3 Idiots. For him, the movie is better. And I agree in the case of 3 Idiots – the film was far superior. It was way funnier and had a much better story and characters than the book.
In some ways a movie is better because in one image it can describe that it would take a thousand words to say. However this is true as well: movies necessarily have to leave out some details, events and characters of the original book which is why the book is better.
They preferred the book and agreed with Bhagat
Some were not impressed with what they saw as Bhagat’s self-promotion
They admired his confidence.
…Were downright rude!
Why are you in my show if you love books so much, he asked.
The he-said-he-said continued.
The whole ‘Twitter War’ was because of a new show after all.
Madhavan said as much.
Filmmakers, actors and marketers find new and unique ways to try and promote their new releases. Actors seemingly jousting on Twitter is as good a way as any it seems – because, in show biz, all publicity is good publicity.
This is a Netflix series that was released recently on 17 December. The show is about a couple facing possible divorce. Starring R Madhavan and Surveen Chawla this one seems to be a comedy-drama. And it also has Chetan Bhagat in it.
