Binge Watch these Movies about Friends this Friendship Day

You can do a lot worse than binge watch movies with your bestie this Friendship Day (that’s on 5th August). Sure there are more meaningful things you can do as well, but there is such nostalgic fun to be had in watching old favourites together, where you mouth the dialogues together and breakout into song in unison! Here are some suggestions of the best friendship films from Hollywood and Bollywood:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Yes it’s western and yes it’s a film about a couple of outlaws, but it is also a film about friendship. They did everything together their robberies, traveling, living and dying together. It is also interesting to know that two of the best looking Hollywood actors ever – Robert Redford and Paul Newman were great pals in real life as well.

Dil Chahta Hai

For me, this film defines friendship – you can be truly yourself, not pretend, and be as rude as you need to – your real friends won’t take offence or judge you. And when it really matters, your real friend is always, always there for you. It’s just such a funny, endearing, relatable and thoroughly enjoyable movie – never gets old! Plus, great songs!

The Sting

Another great film about friends – conmen again played by Robert Redford and Paul Newman (can’t help it; they made some terrific films together!) and some others – looking out for each other. This is such a great story about conmen hatching an elaborate plan to con an even bigger conman who had conned a friend. A sweet, endearing, most satisfying film!

3 Idiots

Yes it’s another Aamir Khan film (so sue me! I cannot help the fact that he’s been in some of the best buddy films ever) and arguably one of the best, most iconic Hindi films ever made. Rancho, Farhan and Raju will go down in celluloid history as being the best ever friends: loyal, supportive, staunch, fun, mischievous!

Thelma and Louise

The quintessential buddy film, this is about two women who go on a road trip with startling, sometimes hilarious and ultimately tragic consequences. A moving, hugely entertaining but also thought provoking film... this is that rare thing – a girl buddy film.

Sholay

Arguably one of Bollywood’s most iconic and influential movies ever, Sholay is the stuff of friendship. Not just living and dying for your friend, but also singing together, laughing together, fighting together, playing pranks…the story about having that one real friend whom you would rather be with than anyone else in the world! Some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable songs there as well!

Shawshank Redemption

Two men in jail bond over the years and after a long and tortuous time in prison, they overcome various odds. One escapes and makes himself some money. The other gets parole after 40 years and the two finally reunite. Though it wasn’t a big hit when it first released, it has since become culturally and historically significant movie.

Dor

This was an astonishingly beautiful film about the unlikeliest of friendships – between a young widow from a traditional background and a determined young woman from a very different urban, educated background. A tentative friendship ensues between the two and results in redemption for both.

How to train your dragon

For me it was a tossup between this and ET. This one is more relevant to my mind; though both gently suggest embracing and befriending the unknown – of befriending the other that you’ve been suspicious of. This is a lovely story about bonding, eschewing violence and finding friendship in unlikely places!

Rang De Basanti

This is one of my most beloved movies of all time. Aamir Khan's character of the college lay-about turned good, inimical adversaries turning compassionate friends, the fun times that the shiftless bunch enjoys before they confront serious issues, idealism against the system – all cinematic tropes that came together beautifully in this film. And then there is A R Rahman's music! Watch this one if you haven’t and again if you have - this friendship day!
