OK, let me first confess that I dislike horror films. However, when I found that Bhoot: The Haunted Ship was triggering memes, I had to force myself to watch the trailer. The trailer has all the scary jump-out-of-you-skin moments that one would expect; strange creatures appearing from nowhere. The film is helmed by the very competent Vicky Kaushal, who lends the requisite gravitas to the eerie goings-on.
Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Ashutosh Rana, a derelict-looking haunted ship called Sea Bird and various apparitions star in the Dharma Productions film. An abandoned ship washes up on shore and Kaushal playing ‘surveying officer’ called Sumit Desai investigates. The trailer quickly shot up to #1 on YouTube trending videos.
Not too many people know about the director or his work. most people are more familiar with Thakur Bhanupratab Singh of Sooryavansham fame.
Those people who enjoy spooky, scary, haunted stories liked the trailer very much. They have high expectations of the film and the highly competent cast.
Some don’t have very high hopes of the film while some do.
The spooky bits seemed to have a been-there-done-that feel to them.
The supposedly scary bits promptly triggered jokes.
It seems difficult to imagine that people actually use torches these days when every phone has a torch app.

Karan Johar is not known for making horror films. Some have their doubts about the movie's box office chances.

A film with a similar name had come out in 2003, which many had hailed as the coming of age of the horror genre in Hindi cinema. Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship releases on 21 February 2020 and is to be the first among a series of horror films by the rather generic name bhoot.
