And so we have yet another in a long line of films that create a fantasy universe of brave warriors of yore repelling the evil invader; making the ultimate sacrifice for the motherland. As with other such films of the ‘historical’ genre, this film about the third battle of Panipat seems likely to be high on drama and emotion; low on historical fact and accuracy. The trailer of Panipat did not impress all that much:
The movie stars Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Kriti Sanon and is slated for release on 6th December 2019. The movie directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar is described as a ‘historical war film’.
Taran Adarsh had appreciative words for the film trailer. But then he has appreciative words for most big banner movies.
The negative reviews seemed to outweigh the positive ones overall.
Twitter commentators commented on how the film draws heavily on other such films.
They also pointed out that “Arjun Kapoor is playing Ranveer Singh of Bajirao Mastani and Sanjay Dutt is playing Ranveer Singh of Padmaavat” in Panipat.
In spite of the grand battle scenes and the high octane drama, the trailer has failed to impress.
Kapoor has come in for a lot of criticism for his acting skills or rather for the lack thereof.
The tweeple felt that Kapoor's character is derivative but that it falls short of Ranveer Singh’s earlier portrayal of another Maratha warrior; Bajirao.
There were many who thought that the look and feel of the film was very Bhansali-esque.
The tweeple also suggested alternative career choices for Arjun Kapoor.
Kapoor came in for a lot of criticism – some thought he was not up to the task of playing a role such as this; others thought he was just overacting.
This line from the trailer was deemed meme-worthy.
…About misfortune
Was also deemed meme-worthy.
As this tweet points out, there is a statutory warning on the film's poster. After watching the trailer of Panipat not too many have very high hopes of the film itself.
