Some of us will remember that pivotal moment in history when victory on the sports field created self-belief in ourselves as a nation. It was the first time India had won the Cricket World Cup and we suddenly realised, we can do it! To me, it’s amazing that it took Bollywood so long to make a film about the 1983 Prudential World Cup win. This was that extraordinary event where India led by Kapil Dev, considered the minnows of the competition, took on and took down the mighty West Indies who were two-time champions. The trailer of 83 the movie looks like all kinds of awesome and I for one cannot wait to watch it in the theatre when it releases on 24 December 2021
It is the story of our first world cup win. Apart from Kapil Dev, we see a bunch of other characters we can identify as Gavaskar, Amarnath, Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil, Srikanth, Roger Binny, Madan Lal, Sandhu, Kirmani etc. Directed by Kabir Khan, this is definitely one to watch out for.
Ranveer Singh has Kapil Dev down to a T – the hair, the teeth, the diction, the cricketing action (as far as my untrained eye can tell).
Ranveer Singh plays Kapil Dev and Deepika Padukone plays Romi, Dev’s wife.
The trailer promises an authentic, period appropriate film with attention to all the details.
The movie will hit theatres on Christmas Eve, 24th December in multiple languages – Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and will also be available in 3D announced Ranveer Singh via this tweet.
For those of us who remember that June evening of 1983, the trailer definitely has a bunch of goosebumps inducing moments.
The trailer has well over 43M views on YouTube in less than 24 hours and many lakhs of likes. The movie has seen several delays and now that the trailer is out and the release date announced, many couldn’t be happier.
And conjecture. It was a momentous time.
This brief scene in the trailer had a lot of people wondering whether the ecstatic kid with the curly mop is supposed to be Sachin Tendulkar.
There is no doubt that Ranveer Singh has essayed some of the most varied of roles in recent times
His infectious, toothy grin, his directness, his much lampooned grasp of English – it all shines through. Pankaj Tripathi plays the then team manager.
We've seen Singh dramatically altering his look and physique to suit the role--- Kapil Dev's newly flamboyant dressing style seems to suggest that the reverse is true as well.
People have loved the trailer and expect the movie to be great as well.
Something that happened nearly 40 years ago still has the power to move us – it is for this reason that people are looking forward to watching 83 in theatres. After all, a cricket match is best watched in the stadium and a movie makes its best impact in a theatre.
