#7Years7Kingdoms – Favourite Moments as Game of Thrones Turns 7

Game of Thrones (GOT) is an unprecedented phenomenon in so many ways – the unapologetically (often completely gratuitous) adult content and the way that the bad guys triumph so often in the series. It is also singular in how story line frequently displays contempt for the viewer by killing off beloved characters, letting the bad guys continue their cruel, sadistic, evil pursuits. When GOT, the series with record viewership and 38 Primetime Emmies, among other claims to fame turned 7, fans went a little berserk.

Arya Stark asked this

Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark – one of the most complex and interesting characters of the series asked this question on the 7th anniversary of the day that the first episode aired. She wanted to know everyone's fave moments of the show.

The show that has everything

Blood, gore, full frontal nudity, honour, dishonour, heroism, sadism, fanaticism, unimaginable perversion, cowardice, good, evil and even some incest thrown in for good measure!

The wait was long!

After years, many seasons, numerous plot diversions, Daenerys the rightful queen of Westeros begins her journey home. The grand scale of the scene, the momentousness of occasion, the soaring music…impactful? Hell yeah!

Can we say WOW!

The rightful queen; the most powerful character in the series arrives with her advisors and her three magnificent dragons. This one certainly counts as one of the top scenes of the series.

Wheels within wheels!

Most characters in the series are gray; with broad strokes of evil in them: selfish, self interested, cunning, conniving. The power struggle is a constant back and forth, there are wheels within wheels; constantly spinning, keeping viewers guessing, shocked, startled, horrified and relieved by turns.

Snow!

The troubled and persecuted Sansa Stark arrives at the home of her aunt. She sees snowfall and remembers home. For a while she thinks she is safe. She was of course wrong; but the moment was wonderful!

Tyrion Lannister!

Easily the most likeable and human of characters in the entire series, he is something of a hero. We sympathise with him even when he kills his own father!

The reunion!

There are so many times that the protagonists almost meet and then don’t in the end, that the viewer wants to throw something at the screen. When this one happens (Jon Snow and Sansa finally reunite), you want to cheer,..really!

Go Arya!

There are so many times when throats are randomly slit and blood comes gushing, and spurting and pouring out in this series that we stop being horrified after a while. But when this young one goes ahead and slits the throat of a certified low life, we feel this is one bloody murder that was justified and coldly satisfying.

This sword fight!

This is a series with more sword fights, daggers plunged into hearts, heads severed and blades impaling bodies than one can count. And yet this sword fight between two strong female characters stands out!

So satisfying!

The King Joffrey is cruel, completely self absorbed, sadistic and exceedingly twisted. So when he is slapped, it does indeed warm the cockles of our hearts.

“Dracarys”

Dragons? Really? You’d think that, wouldn’t you. But they managed to make the giant, fire breathing, powerful beasts plausible. Not only that, most viewers felt a positive thrill each time she said Dracarys!

Sometimes it’s not about the show!

It’s all make-believe; no matter how much the show, the story and its characters reel you in. Here is something to remind us – it’s just entertainment, folks!
