No matter how much we deny, cricket continues to be the most popular sport in India. Perhaps that is the reason why this sport, or rather on the men’s team in Cricket, gets maximum attention from the general public. However there are some other sportspersons out there, who wear the colors of the country and make India proud. They play because they love their sport, are good at it and they want to make India proud. Here we list down four lesser known sportspersons who have made India proud and continue to do so.
Satnam Singh Bhamara
7 feet 2 inches tall, Satnam Singh Bhamara made India proud when he became the first Indian to be chosen to represent India for the sport at the IMG academy in Florida at age 15. Later he was also the first Indian to be drafted into the NBA, the famous professional basketball league of USA. He was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks.
Hailing from the island state of Andamand and Nicobar, cyclist Deborah Herold became the first female from India to finish fourth in UCI rankings. For the unawares, UCI is the world’s governing body of the sport.
Conquering a degenerative eye disease, Arantxa Sanchis made the mark by becoming the only female in India to win World championship in both snooker as well as billiards.
Devendra Jhajharia won the silver medal in the javelin throws (men’s) and became the first Indian para athlete to win a medal in IPC Athletics World Championship conducted at Doha.
