Remember how they said life after school would be a blast? There are some of us who know, and there are some who will discover; all those people, they lied. College is a different ballgame altogether. Stepping into adulthood, there is plenty you discover. With all of its highs and lows, here are a few experiences that are part of every college student’s life:
- If You Think You Can, You Probably Can’t.
And you love naps.
Think you can do the 8 am classes in college because you’ve done them in school? Think again. You might make it the first few days, but the college feel will eventually set in and you will end up struggling to catch up on attendance.
- Black Hole Belly
So hungry.
There is no hunger like that of a college students. If taking over canteens were a paid profession, college students would be millionaires. Learning the value of honey chilli potato and momos and the cost of living being what it is, once you’re in college you learn to make the best of the worst.
- Hygiene Check
You still know where everything is though
If you think you’re someone who is generally tidy, college life may lay a few obstacles in your path. If you live in a hostel then having your own space means having the liberty to clean whenever you want but also only when you want. Don’t be surprised if sloth becomes your biggest sin.
- Procrastination
Whatever it is, you can probably do it later
If you thought you were good at last minute projects in school, college will help you take your talent up a notch. 2000 word essay due in 5 hours? Childs play. **Snap**
- Homemade Food
Excuse me, one dal chawal please.
You never understand how much that dal meant to you till you find yourself surrounded by empty take out boxes craving just one bowl of that homemade goodness.
- Balance
Its like it disappears.
Economic independence brings with it the realisation that money is easier to give than to get. You might find yourself having spent all your money before you’re halfway through the month a bunch of times before you figure it out.
- Laundry
Piles and piles.
Having to remember to wash your clothes will come as a challenge initially, but you’ll get the hang of it. (Even if it is after weeks of repeating clothes because let’s face it, who wants to make that trip to the laundry room?)
- Nights Are Not Meant for Sleep
Sleep is for the weak.
If high school didn’t teach you this, college will help you catch up. Nights are meant for everything but sleep. When are you meant to sleep then, you ask? During lectures of course.
- Difference in People
You’ll warm up to them eventually though.
The diversity in the kind of people you’re surrounded by in college is great. You might feel out of place for a while, but you’ll find your our kind of people eventually.
- Rejection is Inevitable
You’ll get over it.
You’ll put everything into an assignment and feel shattered when your professor tells you it isn’t right. It’ll make you feel cheated and you’ll try to convince yourself that the professor (the same one with multiple degrees hanging in their office) doesn’t know what they’re talking about. After a while though, you’ll come to terms with the fact that rejection is something you have to face and you cannot please everyone.
