The 2021 IPL Auction Highlights – Including Nepotism

The IPL auctions each year are a time for much excitement and hilarity. It is a time when fans of particular players are elated or chastened on behalf of their idol(s) and the respective prices they fetch. It is also a time when people marvel at the buying and selling of talented players for huge amounts; much like a cattle market. This time around, there was the added ‘tadka’ when the nepotism debate was reignited. Here are some of the #IPL2021 highlights.

Big money at stake

The IPL auction is an expensive affair. #IPL2021 is no different.

Yearly event

The IPL auction is something that a lot of people are very interested in.

Gone! For Rs. 14.25 crores

Glenn Maxwell, the Australian all-rounder fetched a staggering price when he was purchased by Rajasthan Royals.

Why though?

Kings XI Punjab had let Maxwell go after a season that didn’t exactly cover anyone in glory.

RR tweeted this

Maxwell proved expensive indeed.

The costliest player

Chris Morris the all-rounder from South Africa was the most expensive player. He was bought for Rs. 16.25 crores, also by Rajasthan Royals.

In a nutshell

This tweet presents the big bidding wars in one tweet.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Fans were happy that he was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings, even though he is seen as more of a traditional player and less a T20 guy.

Meanwhile

As the bidding wars raged, two youngsters attracted attention for the wrong reasons: Aryan, son of Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun, son of Sachin Tendulkar.

His father’s son

Aryan was found at the bidding table of KKR, his father’s IPL team.

Also his father’s son

Arjun Tendulkar is the new kid on the IPL block – the kid we all expected.

Now a part of Mumbai team

Arjun Tendulkar was acquired by Mumbai Indians, for his base price of Rs. 20 lakh.

The speculation

There was a lot of speculation.

And the memes

This is a situation made for memes!

This confusion

There is a player called Sachin Baby (that is his name, not a descriptor) from Kerala --- very different from Arjun Tendulkar.

Also this confusion

Shahrukh Khan was acquired by the Punjab team --- different from this Shah Rukh Khan.

Player, not team owner

“We’ve got Shahrukh,” yelled Preity Zinta while looking at the KKR table. This is M Shahrukh Khan, the most sought after first timer.

This happened

At 6’4”, this Tamil Nadu player is known to be a big hitter. He was in a bus with his teammates when the #IPL2021auction was on and this was the reaction to his acquisition.
