So far in IPL 2017, we have seen sides that win the toss often choose to field; preferring the opposition to set a total first. Chasing has been the preferred option rather than setting up a total. However, day 11 at the Indian Premier League’s tenth edition saw two unsuccessful run chases. Here are some of the highlights of IPL 2017’s Saturday double header, where Kolkata Knight Riders took on Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens, Kolkata and Delhi Daredevils took on Kings XI Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in Delhi.
The visiting Hyderabad team chose to field first and put Kolkata in to bat first at their home ground. Taking advantage of home ground conditions, KKR managed to get to 172 runs losing 6 wickets. Robin Uthappa was the highest run getter for his team with his 68 off just 39 balls. Manish Pandey was the second highest scorer with his 46 off 35. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took three wickets for his team and had the best economy rate of just 5 runs per over.
While SRH made a steady start with openers David Warner (26 off 30) and Shikhar Dhawan (23 off 22), they were unable to build up the momentum required to reach the target set to them. Ultimately they fell short by 17 runs. Chris Woakes picked up the important wickets of Yuvraj Singh and Moises Henriques for this team.
It was his stellar feints with the bat that helped his team get to a total, strong enough to defend successfully. Robin Uthappa was awarded Man of the Match for his 68, which came at the quick strike rate of 174. He was also responsible for the stumping of Deepak Hooda.
Winning the toss, skipper Zaheer Khan chose to bat first. Openers Sanju Samson (19 off 18) and Sam Billings (55 off 40) gave Delhi a solid, steady start. Corey Anderson (39 off 22) Shreyas Iyer (22 off 17) and Rishabh Pant (15 off 9) cemented the innings to set up an unattainable total. Chris Morris (16 off 8) and Pat Cummins (12 off 6) gave the final boost to take their team to 188 for six.
Set a target of 189 to win, the Kings XI Punjab batsmen never really seemed in charge. DD seemed to dominate in all the departments to ultimately win by 51 runs. Hashim Amla’s 19 of 12, Eoin Morgan's 22 off 20, David Miller's 24 off 28 and even Axar Patel's innings best 44 off 29 failed to get the team to the set target.
It was his quick fire 39 off 22 balls later in the innings that helped the Delhi team set up an easily defendable total. Corey Anderson also had David Miller out Leg Before Wicket, when he was at an individual score of 24. He was adjudged Man of the Match.
