Gujarat Lions faced off against the Delhi Daredevils in the 50th game of the IPL on Day 36. Both these teams occupy the wrong half of the points table; in other words they have slim to no chances of advancing to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League’s tenth edition. So, while yesterday’s game was a closely fought, exciting game, did it have any real consequences for either team? We look at the highlights of Match 50 IPL 2017:
The Delhi Daredevils vs Gujarat Lions match was held at the Green Park ground in Kanpur and not at either team’s home ground (Rajkot for GL and Feroze Shah Kotla for DD). Zaheer Khan won the toss for Delhi and chose to field first.
With contributions from Ishan Kishan (34 off 25), Dinesh Karthik (40 off 28) and Aaron Finch (69 off 39), Gujarat got up to 195 in their allotted 20 overs.
It was Shreyas Iyer who really took the match away from Gujarat. His brilliant 96 off 57 balls was studded with 15 boundaries; many of them elegant ground shots and 2 sixes. Basil Thampi’s yorker denied him his century.
Sanju Samson (10 off 7) and Karun Nair (30 off 15) got the ball rolling for DD to begin with, but Rishabh Pant, Marlon Samuels and Corey Anderson did not contribute much. Later contributions from Carlos Braithwaite (11 off 10) and Pat Cummins (24 off 14) helped DD emerge victorious in a close fought match; with just two balls and two wickets to spare.
Corey Anderson snagged the award for the perfect Catch of the Match. Aaron Finch walked away with the award for the Maximum Sixes for his 4 sixes. He also won the award for the Stylish Player of the Day.
Both teams came into the game with 8 points (GL from 12 matches and DD from 11 matches). DD has edged ahead of GL by two points, however it seems pretty clear that both teams are pretty much out of the reckoning regardless of this result. Yesterday’s match was more of a ride for pride than anything else and Delhi happened to emerge victorious.
Two awards of Rs 15 lakhs and Rs 30 lakhs were presented to honour women cricketers and their contributions.
