The 18th day of the tenth Indian Premier League featured two matches. The Rising Pune Supergiants took on the Sunrisers Hyderabad on their home turf at the Maharashtra Cricket Association’s international stadium at Pune, while, Mumbai Indians went head to head with Delhi Daredevils at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Here are some match highlights:
Winning the toss, Pune asked the Hyderabad team to bat first. As usual skipper David Warner gave his team a good start with his 43 off 40 balls, ably supported by Shikhar Dhawan (30 of 29). It was Moises Henriques who made the most runs for his team and had the best strike rate (55 off 28, s/r of 196). Kane Williamson (21 off 14) and Deepak Hooda (19 off 10) were the other batsmen who took the team to a respectable 176 for the loss of three wickets.
The defending IPL champions were not able to defend their total however. RPS did not have the best start when opener Ajinkya Rahane got out having made just 2 runs. There was an excellent effort from the other opener Rahul Tripathi (59 off 41), however it was everyone’s favourite Captain Cool who finally came good and took the game away from the hosts. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s masterful 61 off 34 balls (s/r of 179) came when it mattered most. He steered his team to a last ball win with 6 wickets to spare.
Vijay Shankar who came on as sub fielder bagged the best catch award. Rahul Tripathi won the most sixes award and Vipul Sharma was the most stylish player of the day. The skipper Warner gave credit where it was due, to the match winning performance by Dhoni who was also awarded Player of the Match award.
MI vs DD
The Mumbai team was asked to bat first by Delhi who won the toss. It was not a high scoring match and the hosts could only manage 142 at just over 7 an over. Significant contributions came from Jos Buttler (28 off 18), Keiron Pollard (26 off 29), Kurnal Pandya (17 off 16) and Hardik Pandya (24 off 23).
Opener Aditya Tare was out for a duck while opener Sanju Samson managed just 9 runs. There were two more ducks on the score card – Corey Anderson and Rishabh Pant – and only two batsmen reached double figures. Kagiso Rabada’s 44 off 39 and Chris Morris’s 52 off 41 were in vain. Bowlers Mitchell McClenaghan (3 for 24) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 21) took the match away from the visitors helping Mumbai win. The visitors lost for 14 runs.
The catch of the match award went to Sanju Samson. Hardik Pandya won the Maximum Sixes award while the Most Stylish Player award went to Rabada. The Player of the Match was McClenaghan for his stellar bowling performance; claiming the wickets of Samson, Corey Anderson and Shreyas Iyer.
