If you’ve stopped believing in superstitions, fairy tales, and kissing frogs, maybe it’s time to stop believing these social media myths as well. Here is a list of 5 myths created by social media.

1. Only young people use social media

Social media appeals to people of all ages in the Western world, where the most reliable data is available. In the India, 60 percent of Facebook users are at least 30, and the average age of a Twitter user is now 34 meaning that many people who were not exposed to the Internet until their 20s are now a big part of its user base.

2. Everyone is on social media

Not necessarily true, but that doesn’t stop small and big brands from making the most of it. In fact many companies have changed their product lines or brand image keeping in mind that they want to use Social Media to reach their consumers.

3. Social Media Marketing is too complicated and time consuming

Set up a basic Facebook page or Twitter account and focus on creating quality interactions with your customers. You needn’t become a social media guru or hire a full-time employee to send out tweets and status updates every 10 minutes.

4. Hashtag everything for maximum engagement

#food #yum #salad #fork #yummy #chicken #eatclean #lovefood #lunch #lol #hashtags’. Don’t become that social media person.

5. You must be on every social network

Spreading yourself too thin can be more trouble than it’s worth. Not only do small-business owners have limited time and resources, but engaging on every social channel is too time consuming for you too. It’s important to research the specific social media channels your customers frequent and to target those channels.
