Upcoming Remakes We Hope Bollywood Doesn’t Mess Up

There have been several utterly misguided remakes Bollywood attempted: remember Ram Gopal Verma ki Aag, Karzzz or Himmatwala (which should never have been made even the first time)? Then there were disastrous attempts at recreating desi versions of Hollywood films. Reservoir Dogs became Kaante, Liar Liar became Kyonki Main Jhoot Nahi Bolta, Back to the Future became Action Replayy…no good came of it. There are some remakes in the pipeline which we hope Bollywood doesn’t mess up:

Lal Singh Chadha

Forrest Gump is a classic. Tom Hanks as the slow-witted but kind Forrest who happened to be in the middle of some of history’s most significant moments was wry, funny, touching and very watchable. We will have Aamir Khan reprising the role in an official remake. Filmed in over a hundred different Indian locations, filming began in October 2019 but then was halted. The film will now release to coincide with Christmas this year.

Jersey

This is a Telugu film about a man looking to make his mark in sport a little late in life. The ‘jersey’ is the India t-shirt that his little boy asks from him which leads to the protagonist taking another shot at cricket when times are difficult. Originally starring Nani, the Hindi remake will star Shahid Kapoor. Directed by Goutam Tinnanuri, the film will also star Mrunal Thakur.

The Intern

This was a delightful film about a retired widower (Robert De Niro) who interns at a fashion portal and strikes up an unlikely friendship with the workaholic CEO (Anne Hathaway). In January of 2020, it was announced that Deepika Padukone would star in the remake of the film. Rishi Kapoor was to essay the role of De Niro but with his passing, the movie stalled. The shooting was to have restarted with a new lead and the status of the film is not clear as of now.

Tadap

This movie is based on the original RX 100 which was a 2018 Telugu film. The Hindi remake will star star-kid Ahan Shetty opposite Tara Sutaria.

Antim: The Final Truth

This movie is based on the 2018 Marathi film entitled Mulshi Pattern. The Hindi remake stars Salman Khan and Ayush Sharma and will release this year. The story is about a simple guy transformed by circumstances into a gangster with Khan’s character playing the cop. Check out the first look of Antim and look forward to some well-made Bollywood remakes in times to come.
