IRCTC train ticket booking site is a technical marvel, and has functions that are trickier than you can ever imagine. More than 15 Lakh people book tickets on it everyday, but you are never lucky enough to get your preferred berth on a train. Do you know why?

It is because of Safety reasons! IRCTC always tries to allot middle seat coaches first, and fill lower berth to keep a low center of gravity. So, even when Tatkal shows 500 seats, and you don’t get the window seat you opted for, it’s because of this reason!
Also, the software assigns it in such a way that all coaches have a uniform passenger distribution, and seats are filled starting from the middle, to near the gates.

If they don’t do this, some compartments will be empty and rattling like a toy snake, and some will be very full. If the train take a turn, the centrifugal force that will hit the full compartments will be much larger than the empty ones, and accidents/mishaps can take place.

So now you know why you always have to sit next to the annoying family that keeps offering you food, or the creepy aunty that keeps looking into your phone!
