When we don’t know something we tend to make things up and then we start to fear our own creations. The LGBT community in India are truly victims of society and they face countless challenges includinf an archaic and baseless law (Section 377). So in order to demystify this community of people here are 6 frustrating myths about the LGBT community that people need to stop believing.
They are unnatural
The accepted norm in society is heterosexuality, therefore homosexuality has to be abnormal. It’s never as simple as that. People have to start opening their minds to the fact that these people are also people.
They chose to be this way
Just ask yourselves. Why would ANYONE in their right mind want to choose a life of being bullied, discriminated against, treated inequally and face harrassment? Sexual orientation is not a choice but rather something that one is born with.
Gay = Feminine
Until and unless you are referring to a transgender woman, assuming that a gay man has to be feminine is not okay. Not only does it perpetuate the worst gay stereotype out there, it also reflects zero understanding of the gay community.
Everyone in the LGBT Community is the Same
While most people are well aware of the difference between gay and lesbian people, they tend to club everyone else in these two groups as well. There are bisexuals, transgender men, transgender women and pansexuals who shouldn’t be labelled as being ‘Gay’.
They are suffering from a Disease or illness
Contrary to what Baba Ramdev keeps preaching, Homosexuality is not a disease. The American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics all agree that it is completely natural and not a disorder.
They are the reason for HIV
Not only is this myth factually not true, it’s also completely offensive. HIV is said to have originated from chimpanzees and not from anyone in the LGBT community.
