It is a year where a film about bowel movements garnered critical appreciation (Piku), a film riding purely on nostalgia got one of the biggest of openings (Dilwale), a movie about a deaf-mute child from across the border presented Bollywood’s bad boy Salman Khan in a new light (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), and where Sanskari romance once again returned to Hindi cinema (Prem Ratan Dhan Payo). It was a mixed bag of films this year and we look at the biggest Bollywood hits of 2015:

It as a Salman Khan film but the real show stealer was Harshaali Malhotra playing a little Pakistani deaf-mute child who was returned to her home against great odds. This was the year’s biggest grosser with over Rs 320 crore collected at the box office.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

Another Salman Khan film, this Sooraj Bharjatiya film was a formulaic offering from the filmmaker and raked in 270 crores at the box office.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Kangana Ranaut’s riveting double role, Madhavan’s restrained but unwavering steadfastness in this sequel was loved by audiences and this film made over Rs 150 crores this year.

ABCD 2

After the success of ABCD with largely unknown actors, they made a part 2 using young mainstream stars such as Varun Dhawan and Shradha Kapoor. The movie made over Rs 105 core at the box office.

A well crafted, taut, slick and highly watchable film with an excellent ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Rana Daggubati and Anupam Kher was the year’s fifth biggest hit with Rs 95 crores.

Apparently once wasn’t enough for audiences or the filmmakers so we had Welcome Back, with Anil Kapoor, Nana Paketakar, John Abraham, Shruti Hasan and others, raking in over Rs 94 crores.

The crazy caper starring Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson and Kay Kay Menon comes in next with collections of over Rs 90 crore this year.

Another Akshay Kumar starrer, this one also had Shruti Hasan (a good year for her as well) and Kareena Kapoor. The film managed to collect Rs 86 crore.

Brothers

The film about brothers squaring off against each other in the boxing ring, with Siddharth Malhotra and Akshay Kuma. The story is ‘inspired’ from the Hollywood film Warrior, and this one made over Rs 82 crores.

Shoojit Sarkar’s highly nuanced film about families and relationships wrested stunning performances from Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Viewers approved of this unusual but delightful film which earned about Rs 79 crores this year.
