Bosses, team leaders or immediate supervisors are the primary reasons for people either loving or leaving their jobs. Quoting Joan Lloyd, “A boss is an umbilical cord that connects employees to an organisation, and if that cord is damaged, employees will eventually leave.” Therefore, if you are in a managerial position, these are some cornerstones to follow to keep your subordinates happy and content in their jobs.

Appreciate their contribution

Appreciating your employees takes more than just an occasional “attaboy” or “attagirl.” Try and say something specific like “I love the way you bring the team together” or “I appreciate your dedication towards the organisational goals.”

Be a leader, not a boss

There is a difference between being a leader and being a boss. A leader is someone who steps back and brings out the best in a team, helps them in difficulties, takes the blames, gives credit and acts as a part of the team.

Honesty

Employees respect an honest boss. Whatever the scenario may be, being completely transparent with your team will earn you their trust and respect.

Be a person to look up to

Employees look up to their bosses and consider them a role model. No employee will like a boss who doesn’t lead by example and saves his own skin by shifting the blame on the team in times of adversity.

Get to know the employees

A great boss will stop by and say hello to their employees, involve himsel or herself in their lives and will formulate an unbreakable bond with them.

Asks for a team member’s opinion

It is important to ask employees for their opinion on any particular matter. Keeping them in the loop for decision-making processes boosts their morale like nothing else.
