Virender Sehwag is sui generis – one of a kind in the world of cricket. After an illustrious career playing cricket and entertaining millions, he started another kind of career entertaining the tweeple with his sharp observations and unique humour. He often has his own take on the news and about what goes on in Indian cricket. Recently Virender Sehwag offered to play for the Indian team currently touring Australia. Here’s what happened:
He offered his services to the Indian team again in view of the many injuries that currently plague the Indian team.
Jaspreet Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari are all injured.
They were touched by Sehwag’s offer to come out of retirement; albeit made in a lighter vein.
There is speculation about which players will take the place of the injured players who are now ruled out of the fourth test Down Under (starting 15 January at the Gabba in Brisbane).
Perhaps Team India's coach will be roped in, joked the tweeple.
Sehwag is well known for his pyrotechnics on the cricket field. He is one of the few players in the world to have scored a triple ton.
As a player Sehwag was endlessly entertaining for the crowds and an unpredictable and uncontrollable nightmare for the bowling side.
What an idea sirji!
Sehwag is said to have a simple cricketing philosophy – the job of the bat is to get the ball over the boundary.
Sehwag always enjoyed playing against any attack; even more formidable ones such as the Australians.
If one veteran is willing to come back, surely others will be as happy to do so? There are many who would love seeing Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman back in action.
The tweeple were left wondering how so many players of the team could become injured all at the same time.
Affectionately called Viru, Sehwag’s inimitable style could well give current players a run for their money, thought the tweeple.
Some commented upon the Australian predilection for sledging; possibly alluding to the currently ongoing controversy about Steve Smith (Smith was accused of ‘cheating’ after he was seen scuffing up the mark of Indian batsman Rishabh Pant).
When Sehwag laughingly offered to rejoin the Indian side in Australia to make up for the injured players, many were overcome with a sense of nostalgia.
