The much awaited Sanjay Leela Bhansali historical extravaganza Bajirao Mastani opens in theatres on 18th December and there is a significant portion of the population looking forward to it with the keenest anticipation. The film stars three of Bollywood’s hottest current stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the title roles and Priyanka Chopra as Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai. Even apart from that there are many reasons for the anticipation –

It’s a Sanjay Leela Bhansali Film

He has given us films like Black, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Guzarish, Ramleela; any film by him is always on a grand scale, a spectacle, and a visual feast.

Few historicals get made in Bollywood, when one is being made by the Bhansali banner, everyone turns up to watch. There will be gorgeous clothes, stunning sets, lavish war scenes and more to look forward to.

It’s a love triangle

There is always angst, unfulfilled love and pathos in a love triangle; Bajirao Mastani promises to be one. It is the story of a Peshwa and his second wife Mastani. There is also his first wife Kashibai in the story. Clearly a triangle; what spin the director puts on it remains to be seen.

It’s a great story!

This is a story that has fascinated film makers… a Hindu aristocrat’s love for a Muslim woman! Serial makers and writers through the ages; its retelling by Bhansali should be riveting. If the trailer is anything to go by, this will be a saga of tumultuous love, of passion, war and lots of drama.

The chemistry between the protagonists

Sure there is the Ranveer –Deepika chemistry that we saw in Ram-Leela; then there is the Bhansali-esque chemistry between the two leading women. Pinga, the characteristic song where Deepika and Priyanka Chopra dance together is already a hit.

There was the petition for a ban!

The petition for the banning of a film is always great pre-release publicity. So this film’s been there, done that! An NGO in Pune apparently felt that history was being distorted and that it would “hurt sentiments”.  Not likely to hurt the fortunes of the film though.
